Several leaders of international humanitarian organization World Vision in Indonesia facilitated the establishment of Wahana Visi in March 1995.

At that time, the national entity was named Yayasan World Vision Indonesia and was designed to gradually take over World Vision International's work in Indonesia. At the end of 1998, however, the name was changed into Yayasan Wahana Visi Indonesia, which we are still using up to these days.

Although the name has to change, the role of Wahana Visi remains the same: the main partner of World Vision in implementing most of World Vision intervention programs across Indonesia. In 2010, Wahana Visi implemented about 41 long-term and comprehensive community development programs - called Area Development Programs or ADPs - in its partnership with World Vision. All these projects - and several special projects -- receive funding support from overseas donors and sponsors channeled through World Vision.

Besides, Wahana Visi has also implemented six ADPs through its own in-country fund-raising campaigns. The six ADPs are in Sambas and Singkawang in West Kalimantan province, Sikka in East Nusa Tenggara province, North Halmahera in North Maluku province,  Maro and Pantai Kasuari in Papua  province. 4,365 Indonesian sponsors support these long-term undertakings to empower the community to develop their resources to reach self-sufficiency.

They support Wahana Visi through the child sponsorship arrangement. The funding is used to facilitate integrated development programs covering education, primary health care, sanitation improvement, community organization, income generation and other critical initiatives needed to help transform the lives of the community. Wahana Visi cooperates with scores of relevant institutions at the field, both public and private, to create solid synergy in the fight against poverty and to ensure the community edging closer to the fullness of life.
